| In this example, the underdrawing was executed in a dry medium, possibly black chalk. The underdrawing served as a working drawing, in which the painter worked out his composition. It also functioned as a guide for the painter's brush in the initial paint phase, and helped prepare shaded zones, as in the area to the right of the nose. |
