Layering: X-radiography and visible light

This X-radiograph shows that initially the white area of the collar was painted larger than in the final portrait. While still wet, the painter scratched into this white paint with a palette knife, causing ridges where the paint accumulated. These ridges show as white lines on both the X-radiograph and the paint surface.
This atypical painting technique might be a valuable tool in future attributions to this master.
