The Virgin and Child most likely originally formed the left wing of a small diptych which functioned as a private devotional image. The raised index finger of the Christ Child, who is looking at the beholder, would have pointed to the portrait of the donor on the right wing of the diptych. The donor directed his or her prayers to the Christ Child through the mediating Virgin, creating an intricate pattern of communication and veneration between the three depicted figures and the beholder.
