Examination by detail

An early Last Judgment
by Jan Provoost

Provoost was a prolific painter
who ran workshops in Antwerp
and in Bruges. Three other Last
Judgments from his hand are known,
now in museums in Bruges, Hamburg
and Detroit. Based on stylistic
grounds, scholars believed this panel
to be the earliest version.
Recent technical examinations
support this assessment.

The four boards of the oak support panel were analyzed with dendrochronology. This dating method for wood determined that the panel was probably painted between 1500 and 1505. The painting's frame was dated with this method as well, and turned out to be exactly as old as the panel.
