The head of Saint John the Baptist
Saint John the Baptist in the top right corner
of the panel. Some retouching is visible under
this magnification, lying on top of cracks
in the original paint film. The outlines of
the nose, for example, were reinforced
by a restorer. Scattered red dots are painted
around the edge of the hair and the gilding.
These dots are later additions as well; they
were probably applied when the background
was entirely re-gilded in the 1960s.
