Portrait of a Man

This portrait is dated "ANNO 1541." It is
attributed to the Master of the 1540s, an
unidentified painter who was active in
Antwerp in that decade, hence his name.
At some point in its history, the panel
was cut down. Originally, the sitter's
age must have followed the Latin phrase
SUÆ ÆTATIS ("at the age of").

Neither the painter nor the sitter are known by name, but technical examination revealed a great deal of information about this portrait. It was documented under visible light, with infrared reflectography, with X-radiography, and under ultraviolet light. The back of the panel was also photographed.
