The term "Master of the 1540s" is a designation given to an artist whose name is not known but whose individual style can be recognized by scholars. The paintings attributed to this master are all dated within the decade of the 1540s, hence his name. This painting has been cropped on the right and at the lower edge. The age of the sitter, originally part of the Latin inscription SUÆ ÆTATIS, was cut off in this process. The sitter's arms and hands were probably also originally depicted.
