Verein Projects - Acquisitions

The Verein has played an enormously active role in supporting the Museum’s acquisition program. The Verein as a whole, individual members, associated organizations, and others have enabled works of art to enter the collection in many different ways. The variety and extent of this activity precludes a full, detailed listing of every work of art in whose acquisition the Verein has played a role since 1983 , but highlights include:

  • The Young Friends have collectively helped to select and acquire a video and film work by Jeanne Faust and Ulrich Koehler.
  • For the Museum's 100th Anniversary, gifts through the Acquisitions Committee of the Verein: paintings by Franz Stuck, Paula Modersohn-Becker, and Ernst Wilhelm Nay
  • Donation of lithographs by Arnulf Rainer, a gouache by Emil Schumacher, a sculpture by Franz Bernhard, a collection of works and archival materials by Bauhaus artists, and a painting by Raimund Girke
  • Contributions by the Verein as a whole towards the purchase of paintings by K.H. Hödicke, Gerhard Richter, Piet Mondrian, a photograph by Andreas Gursky, and a photomontage by Marianne Brandt
  • Individual or group contributions towards acquisitions of multiples and unique works by Joseph Beuys, a gouache by Fred Thieler, a painting and drawings by Gerhard Richter, a large-scale artist’s book by Anselm Kiefer, a drawing by Max Klinger, a chair by Marcel Breuer, a painting by Paula Modersohn-Becker, and a ceramic relief by Rosemarie Trockel
  • Donations of particular works of art by Verein members, such as a drawing by Max Liebermann, a painting by Lovis Corinth, and a collage by Wolfgang Hildesheimer
  • Paintings by Gerhard Richter, Gotthard Graubner, and Konrad Klapheck, donated by Lufthansa German Airlines
  • Paintings and sculpture by Horst Antes, Gunter Uecker, and Norbert Kricke, and a large group of postwar German photographs acquired through the Cultural Council of the Federation of German Industry
