Center Overview

The Center for the Technical Study of Modern Art investigates the materials and issues associated with the making and conservation of modern art and serves as a resource for conservators, scholars, and students by collecting, preserving, and presenting relevant materials and research.

In pursuit of its mission, CTSMA makes available for research artists' materials, artists' interviews, documents related to relevant conservation assessments and treatments, and ephemera associated with the creative process. It facilitates the dissemination of such information through teaching, lecturing, and publication.

CTSMA's archive includes the papers and treatment reports of Orrin Riley, one of America's earliest conservators of modern art. The archive houses interviews with many prominent artists, including Jasper Johns, Sol LeWitt, Brice Marden and James Rosenquist. The archives are available by appointment to qualified scholars.

Original works of modern art can be seen in the galleries of the Fogg Museum, in the Busch-Reisinger Museum and in the Mongan Center Study Room for prints, drawings and photographs.

A large selection of the Art Museums' collections can be viewed online at Collections Online: www.artmuseums.harvard.edu/collections.
