Special Programs for Summer Camps and School Groups

Faces from Many Places!
This workshop will offer children ages 5 to 7 a look at lots of different faces in the paintings and sculptures of the Fogg and Busch-Reisinger galleries. Children will participate in gallery games, hear stories, and make art projects based on the faces they see.

Arts of the Islamic World: A Workshop for Children
In conjunction with our exhibition Overlapping Realms: Arts of the Islamic World and India, 900-1900, we are pleased to offer a workshop for children ages 8 to 12. Participants will learn to recognize several design elements within Islamic art, including geometric, calligraphic, floral, and figural examples. The workshop will include a guided look at the artworks in the exhibition, gallery activities, and creation of a hands-on art project to take home.

Groups may schedule sessions on weekdays, morning or afternoon, July 9-August 15. (Plan on about an hour and 15 minutes.) Maximum group size is 12 children. Programs are free, but reservations must be made at least 3 weeks in advance, and group personnel must be present for and help with all activities. Call Susannah Hutchison at 617-496-8576 for more information and reservations.

Fogg and Busch-Reisinger galleries; meet in the Calderwood Courtyard

Tired of that same old soccer camp? Feel like adding a little art to your children's summer? Come to the Fogg Art Museum for our newly instituted Creative Art Adventures-enriching and stimulating experiences that will engage children ages 8 and up in looking at and creating art.

In addition to offering imaginative gallery and studio experiences, we'll ask kids to think about what inspired various artists to create their works. Participants will learn to recognize what inspires them and to work from those ideas to create their own works of art. We're delighted that artist and educator Deborah Putnoi will lead these sessions along with Art Museums staff.

Each session will include:

  • Viewing artworks in the galleries and making art every day in 2- and 3-dimensional media
  • A different theme and activities each day built around topics such as color, shape, sound, music (did you know that Paul Klee was a musician as well as an artist?), collage, paint, sculpture, and more
  • Mid-morning snack
  • All art materials

Give your children some summer fun while they learn to tap their own creative resources. Please bring sketchbooks, and wear clothes for messy projects.

June sessions: $150, $140 for children of Members. Registration deadline is June 1.

August sessions: $130, $120 for children of Members. Registration deadline is August 1.

Each session limited to 12 children. To ask questions or register with a credit card, please call 617-496-8576. Or send a check payable to the Harvard University Art Museums to the Public Education Department, Harvard University Art Museums, 32 Quincy Street, Cambridge, MA 02138.
