American Art since 1950
August 16, 2003 through April 30, 2006
Art in the United States changed profoundly after mid-century. Frank Stella, Kenneth Noland, and Morris Louis maintained the scale and ambition of abstract expressionism while developing more methodical ways of applying paint to canvas. This "cooler" approach was extended by Jasper Johns and Ed Ruscha, while painters such as Hans Hofmann and Helen Frankenthaler continued to explore aspects of heroic gesture. Also included in this exhibition are important sculptures by David Smith and Dmitri Hadzi and contemporary paintings by Richard Artschwager, Julian Lethbridge, and others. Organized by Harry Cooper, curator of modern art. |
