This exhibition presents a variety of modern and contemporary approaches to the medium of photography as it is practiced in South Asia and by artists of South Asian descent. The installation features documentary and conceptual imagery, from street photography with a handheld camera to digital montages, and includes examples by Raghubir Singh, Nasreen Mohamedi, and Dayanita Singh. Focus on South Asian Photography will be followed by Pavilions of Love: The Codification of Ritual Space, an installation of Indian paintings opening on May 12.
These exhibitions complement Overlapping Realms: Arts of the Islamic World and India, 900-1900, a sampling of visual arts produced by the varied peoples who inhabited the region stretching from southern Europe through South Asia. Relying primarily on ceramics and metalwork, the exhibition emphasizes commonalities and continuities, even as it explores diversity of intention and technique.
Focus on South Asian Photography was curated by Kimberly Masteller, assistant curator of Islamic and later Indian art. Pavilions of Love was curated by Anne Marie Doyle, Norma Jean Calderwood Curatorial Intern. Overlapping Realms was curated by Mary McWilliams, Norma Jean Calderwood Curator of Islamic and Later Indian Art.
