Class Visits to the Mongan Center

Class visits must be planned well in advance, especially if the visit will be your first time teaching in the Mongan Center or teaching a new topic. Please be aware that the Fogg Museum staff does not conduct classes, though a staff member will be present at all times to supervise.

Seminar Room
There is a small seminar room available for groups or class visits Monday-Friday 10 am-4:30 pm. No more than 12 objects may be viewed in the seminar room, and they are limited to small objects that can be framed (i.e., no portfolios, sketchbooks, etc.). The maximum class size for this room is 12 students. Classes with more students should be divided into smaller groups that can visit the Mongan Center in shifts (while other groups visit different areas of the Museum) or in separate trips. This room also has a slide projector for instructor use.

Study Room
An instructor may request to use the study room for a class visit during hours when the study room is closed to the public (all day Mondays, Tuesday-Friday 10 am-1 pm). The maximum number of objects allowed in this room is 20, and larger pieces, portfolios, etc. may be viewed here. Class size in the study room is limited to 20 students. Classes with more students should be divided into smaller groups that can visit the Mongan Center in shifts (while other groups visit different areas of the Museum) or in separate trips.

Planning and Object Selection

  • At the beginning of the semester, please call or email the study room supervisor to schedule the class visit. Make an appointment to request objects for the class. Notify the supervisor if your class will also visit the Museum exhibitions or any other part of the Harvard University Art Museums. Please note that classes in the Mongan Center are scheduled on a first-come first-serve basis. The study room is often booked months in advance.
  • Request work for your class visit. The study room supervisor and curators will work with professors to choose the prints, drawings and photographs that are appropriate for each visit. Past classes have covered a variety of topics. The collection can be studied thematically, chronologically, or by particular artist, medium, or technique.
  • Two weeks prior to the scheduled visit, please send your final object list to the study room supervisor (unless the list was finalized during your appointment). A list of the names of all students visiting with the class should also be sent at this time. We must have this information finalized and confirmed two weeks in advance in order to proceed with the class visit.

Guidelines for Study Room Usage
Please share the following information with your students before class visits and independent assignments. Certain precautions are necessary to ensure the safety of artworks in the Mongan Center.

  • Writing and sketching may be done in graphite pencil only.
  • Never hold or hand any object, including notebooks, keys, jewelry, and loose clothing, directly over an object.
  • Never point at an artwork with a pencil or other sharp object.
  • Do not sit on tables, and do not lean against tables or windowsills where art is displayed.
  • Please do not bring food, beverages, gum, or candy into the Mongan Center.
  • Only Museum staff may handle works of art during classes.
  • All bags and jackets must be checked in the Museum coat room or stored in the Mongan Center closet.

Group Fees
Museum admission is discounted for visiting groups of eight or more. Arrangements must be made ahead of time by contacting the study room supervisor at 617-384-8310 or mongan@fas.harvard.edu.

The reduced rates are $6.50 for adults, $5 for seniors, and $4 for students.

Student cards, which cost $4 and are valid for museum admission for 30 days, are also available. These can be especially useful for classes in which students are expected to return on their own time to study objects.
