Frequently Asked Questions
  1. Where are you located?
The Mongan Center study room is located on the ground floor of the Fogg Museum, off the north side of the courtyard.
  2. Can anybody visit?
Yes. The study room is open to the public Tuesday through Friday from 2 pm to 4:45 pm and at other times by appointment. During the academic year, it may also be open Saturday from 10 am to 12:45 pm. Contact the study room supervisor before your visit to confirm open hours: mongan@fas.harvard.edu or 617-384-8310.
  3. Must I know in advance what I want to see?
No. As a drop-in visitor, you may browse the collection index or Museum publications to choose art work for viewing or ask the study room staff for a recommendation based on your interests.

One exception to this policy is for the viewing of color photographs, which are kept in cold storage. Requests for color photographs must be made at least 24 hours in advance to allow adequate time for them to acclimatize.
  4. How can I find out if you have works by a particular artist?
Part of the collection catalog can be accessed on-line (www.artmuseums.harvard.edu/collections). The best way to find out what is available is to stop by and browse through the card catalog. If this is not feasible, you can contact the study room supervisor to inquire about a particular artist or work (mongan@fas.harvard.edu or 617-384-8310)
  5. Is there an admission charge?
Visitors to the study room must pay the regular museum admission. They may then visit any of the Harvard University Art Museums during the day. Museum admission is free on Saturday mornings from 10 am to noon. An admission button obtained before noon on Saturdays allows access to all of the Harvard University Art Museums all day. http://www.artmuseums.harvard.edu/information/admission.html
  6. Can I sketch from works of art?
Yes. Sketching is allowed only from objects that can be framed (i.e., no books or albums). Please allow a few extra minutes for objects to be framed.
  7. Can I take photographs of the artwork?
Photography of certain objects in the collection is permitted, provided that it is for personal use only and that no flash is used. Permits to photograph inside the museum should be requested at the museum front desk. To obtain images for publication and other purposes, please use the on-line image ordering form (http://www.artmuseums.harvard.edu/vr).
  8. How can I contact you?
The study room supervisor can be reached at 617-384-8310 or mongan@fas.harvard.edu
  9. Is parking available?
On weekdays, one day parking permits are available on-line at the nearby Broadway Garage for researchers and visitors to staff. https://www2.uos.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/permit/purchase.pl
