I began to paint at an early age . . . . I was always a realist.

Mondrian did not find his identity as an abstract painter easily. At fourteen he began studying drawing under the guidance of his father, an amateur artist who ran a Calvinist school. He moved to Amsterdam to study full-time in the official art school, the Rijksacademie, in 1892-1894.
