This detail shows four different paint layers. Over the vertical strokes of a white layer (1) Mondrian painted a dark blue (2), which he painted over in turn with a light blue (3). Last, Mondrian painted another white layer (4) with horizontal brush strokes, apparently while the lighter blue layer was still wet.
