Mondrian used a masking ribbon to hide the heads of the nails attaching the canvas to the stretcher. For this photograph the masking ribbon (not Mondrian's original one) was temporarily removed. You can see paint layers that Mondrian applied both before and after he put the masking ribbon in place (below and above the arrow, respectively).
