Mondrian not only added color fields in New York but also reworked the white areas. The smooth white paint around the edges of the white rectangle is the older, European application. The layer of white that Mondrian applied in New York has much more brushwork. In Europe, Mondrian mainly used the pigment lead white, and in New York he mainly used titanium white.
