painted surface   This painting is in very good condition. Unlike many other paintings by Mondrian, the canvas was never lined, and except for a small retouch in the top right corner, the painting was never restored.

The earliest known image of the composition is in a photograph of Mondrian in his New York studio, probably from October 1941. The composition appears to be close to completion. The white arrow shows where Mondrian later inserted the red field into the yellow field.
