In its final state, this painting
was first exhibited in January 1942 at the
Valentine Gallery
in New York. It had been consigned to the gallery in early 1938,
together with Composition with Blue, Red, and Yellow
(Düsseldorf) and Picture No. II (Stockholm).
Mondrian had these three paintings shipped directly from Paris to New York, and
must have retrieved them from the gallery upon his arrival in New York in 1940 to rework them.
The first state of the painting is relatively well documented, and together with the findings from the technical examinations, allows a close look into Mondrian's New York reworkings. |
