Oorthuys photograph   The composition in its first state is depicted at the far left of a photograph of Mondrian's studio in Paris, taken by Cas Oorthuys in the summer of 1937. Only a small part of the work is visible.

A detail of this photograph,  showing the composition in its first state, indicates that Mondrian had probably finished it by the time of the photograph. The subframe is attached and the black lines shine, suggesting that they have been varnished.
