first state photograph   A photograph of the entire first state (1937) of the painting exists. Although the edges are slightly cropped and the quality of this black-and-white reproduction is poor, it is invaluable in understanding Mondrian's New York reworkings.

A portion of the title of the painting in its first state is known from an inscription on the (now lost) original
subframe: "II: ... blanc et rouge." This inscription implies that the single color field must have been red. That information allows for a color reconstruction of the first state, including the subframe.
