This painting, now in the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, probably never reached a completed state in Europe. Nevertheless, several early states of the composition can be reconstructed using three sources of information: photographs of Mondrian's Paris studio, technical examinations, and the diary of Charmion von Wiegand.
