This is the first English-language edition of the definitive German catalogue raisonné of the multiples and prints of Joseph Beuys (1921–1986), the most influential German-and perhaps the most influential European-artist of the postwar period. He produced an enormously diverse body of work that challenges established notions about art and redefines the potential and power of the art process. As artist, performer, professor, philosopher, and activist, Beuys often used unconventional materials such as felt, fat, and honey; his activities not only in art, but in the fields of politics and ecology, often sparked controversy and continue to inspire artists throughout the world. Some 600 multiples (editioned objects and prints) are the result of the artist's "social sculpture," and his advocacy of an expanded concept of art-the notion that every individual and all activity is creative. This new English edition has been updated with corrections to the original edition, as well as lists of the holdings of the three most comprehensive collections of Beuys's multiples in the world: the Busch-Reisinger Museum, Walker Art Center, and Kunstmuseum Bonn. This volume was copublished by the Busch-Reisinger Museum/Harvard University Art Museums, the Walker Art Center, and Edition Schellmann.
