The subject of Christ’s Passion preoccupied the German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528) throughout his working life. He explored three primary concerns within this narrowly defined subject: how to imagine Christ as a man in a body, how to inscribe himself (Dürer) into the image, and how to account for his viewer in the scene. Because it spans his entire creative career, Dürer’s Passion work not only charts his changing attitudes toward these issues, it also provides a window onto his artistic development as a whole. The Essay volume includes an illustrated essay, a list of the Passion series and related works, and illustrations of related works. The Album volume includes illustrations of five of the Passion series: the Large, the Green, the Small, the Engraved, and the Oblong Passions.
