This volume offers a comprehensive summary of research undertaken by the Harvard University Art Museums’ Straus Center for Conservation and the Polytechnic University of Valencia to study the pigments used in exquisite miniatures from a group of codices now housed in the Historical Library at the University of Valencia, Spain. The illuminated manuscripts were originally part of a collection founded by Alfonso V, king of Aragon, who conquered Naples in the mid-15th century. The books came to Valencia with Duke Ferdinand of Calabria when he fled Naples at the end of the 15th century, after France invaded Italy. The bilingual (English/Spanish) publication of this technical study allows the reader to appreciate more fully the political, artistic, and technical intricacies of one of the most interesting periods of Western history. Includes a select bibliography. Copublished with the Polytechnic University of Valencia.
